In Illustrator 8, (Mac), when you place psds with transparent bg,
there is a white surround, which blocks the view behind.
Basically I want to be able to do what I can do in PS:
Make new doc, drag images with transparent bg to it and organise
the layers as I like - all the while being able to see though the
bits where there are no pixels (without having to set the layers
themselves to dim)
When similar is tried in Illustrator by "placing" the same images
in a new doc, the pixeled images have rectangular surrounds
(white). This white surround is not transparent. I realise this
is elementary but would appreciate a pointer to be rid of the
white...

The most easy way is upgrading to Illustrator 9/10/CS/CS2, but you can
also use clipping mask. You can draw clipping paths over artwork in
Illustrator with the pen tool and create a clipping mask with it (by
selecting the PSD file and the clipping path and choose Object->Clipping
mask->Make).

If your image has a transparent background in PS, instead of creating a
clipping path in Illy:
In PS, select the background either by using the "sample" tool or by
going to Select>Load Selection>and then the layer the image is on . . .
With the selection active, open the Paths palette and from the drop
down menu, select "Make Path." Save the image (make sure to preserve
clipping paths when you save).
Now open the image in Illy and your clipping path should be there in
the file with the background already transparent. NO tracing!!
It may seem like several extra steps, but it saves time since you don't
have to actually trace anything. Especially since apparently, someone
traced the image already at some time (since it's got a transparent
background).
HTH!!

I was most keen on this suggestion and it looked so
promising...but for some reason or other I can't get it to work?
Wonder what I am doing wrong?
This is what I do to try to follow your suggestion:
1. Open a PSD that has an object with the chequered transparent
background (yes, it came from a file where the object had had a
path which I had used to isolate it way back as you wisely
guessed)
2. Select>Load Selection> (the layer is described as "layer 1
transparancy")
3. I press the little arrow on the paths palette. And choose
'Make work path" and select 1 px as tolerance.
Now I am stuck as I don't know how I can "make sure to preserve
clipping paths". I just save!
As for opening in Ill, whatever I do (eg. using open command),
the image has a white bg as shown by when I place a dark square
on a layer under it.

Hi Waldo, I assume there is a simple way to do this in 9 or CS?
What I want to do would simply take weeks if I had to do the
paths from scratch. So maybe I need to upgrade then, is it easy
in 9 or CS?

In CS (I don't have 9 or CS2), Illustrator can handle the transparency
of a PSD file. This is the easiest way as you don't have to do anything
(except making transparent art in Photoshop...).
The only drawback is that not all RIPs (when you go to a printer)
support transparency yet

O dear! I was thinking, actually I can use a PC that has 9
(though I don't like and am not so great with Windows...). Until
I read the bit about the printer! Maybe I better just make a
graphic in PS or even Fireworks (which is much nicer to work
with, objects can be moved about independently of layers... and
simply import the finished thing and be done!
I appreciate your remarks...
