I'd like to create type in Illustrator that has a look similar to
Photoshop's "inner bevel" layer effect. The letters should appear to
arc up with a highlight in the center.

I've tried using Illustrator's 3D effects, and I've also tried placing
thinner type in a lighter color over dark, fat type and blending them.
I couldn't coax the look I wanted out of either method.

Any suggestions on a way to do this? Thanks in advance...

I asked this ages back and I don't think I saw any answer... I
would like to know for Illustrator 8 on a Mac. I have thought
that you can do this the long way about... make it in PS or
FireWorks and place it... make up a bevel rectangle and put the
type above it and make a mask and all sorts of things... there
might be a simpler way for sure?

The only way I know for sure to get the effect I want is to do a
gradient mesh on each individual letter. It seems like a lot of trouble
for a small effect, though. I want the quick and simple way. Wink

Indeed! So how about some holding the secret to a simpler way,
spilling the beans!
