In Ill 8 (Mac), if you are using a text cursor and want to move
to a select cursor, for obvious reasons you can't press V, you
can get out by going to the tool bar and clicking things... is
there a key combo or some way to tell the machine I don't really
want to type "v" but get the black arrow select without mousing
(applescript? voice recog. "Hoy, select now!")...

I use the mouse more often than the tools shortcut keys.
If I have the text currently selected I use the escape key (windows)
and that switches me to the selection tool (V) then I can use the
other keys (A) (T) (P) (etc...)

Said another way, Esc then A

As best as I remember (not at the Mac right now), whatever tool you are using
turns into the arrow (Select tool) when you hold down the Cmd key. Click
anywhere while holding Cmd, and then press V to get the Select tool.

The escape key on my Mac OS X has the effect of the delete key in
this context!

Quickest way I use is to CMD key (Hotkey for selection) + click to get
out of text entry, then hotkey to the desired tool.

The "recommended" way is to CMD-Shift-A to deselect, then hotkey to
taste.

I prefer the former as it's easier on the fingers.

Wonder why it is "recommended", what would be the purpose of the
shift?

On a Mac, Cmd-Shift-A is 'Deselect All' in Illustrator, with Cmd-A being
'Select All'. In this case, Adobe uses the Apple practice of using shift
to invert a meta key combination's function.

It's "recommended" as it's doing what it's designed to do: deselecting
whatever is selected, and it's what many Adobe reps will tell you to use
in that case. It's also in the manual. Smile

OK... I think, seeing your meaning, it is recommended because it
accords with general Mac practice.
