Post subject: (another) Newbie path select question

Hi
I'm using the Direct Selection Tool to select a closed path and move the
points and curves around. Once selected, I have to add a new anchor point
with the Pen Tool and then delete it before the direction lines appear and I
can move points around. If I don't do this, the whole path gets selected and
moved.
Is there an easier way to do this? Hope I'm making sense!

With your object deselected move the direct selection tool over the area
where your anchor point would be, notice that when you are over the
anchor point the little square by the direct selection pointer turns
white, simply click and that will select just one anchor point. If you
click on a line or inside a filled object all anchor points are selected
and the whole object will move.
Clear as mud.

Thanks for that, Don, I hadn't noticed that behavior. Here's my
workaround, which is almost as fast:
Click the object with the Direct-Selection tool. This selects the whole
object. Shift-click the point you want. That DEselects it. Then click
the point again to select it and deselect the other points.

I am missing something I believe.
When I use the Direct Selection tool I can just move one anchor point
without problems.....
Also, when I hold the Alt(Option) key and click on one open selected
anchor point it will be normally selected. Same result really when it
comes down to editing that point.

The problem is the difficulty of selecting a point in Illustrator. In
Outline mode you can see a corner but in Preview it's sometimes hard to
get the point you need. I often use area select to select an object.
The technique I posted works well in those cases.

p.s. Is there any way to change the "pick distance" to select a point
when you click a few pixels away?

Still a bit confused here Tom.
When I use the Direct Select Tool and select the object (randomnly on
the outline of the object, Preview or not) I see the anchor points and I
can just move them. If there are so many anchor points close together,
zoom in.
You can also just hold and drag your mouse over the area where the point
should be and select it that way.
I do not believe there is a way to change the selecting distance, but
then again, the lesser anchor points the better I would say:)

Change the selecting distance in Preferences/Smart Guides in the snapping
tolerance option.

That's what I thought too but this post made me want to try it. It does
indeed affect the mouse selector.

Woow.....that is pretty cool then..........maybe that should be an add
on in the handbook that I lost during all my migrating LOL. I will give
