Any way I can erase selected pixels in a bitmap image that's already
been inserted into an Illustrator vector image document that's been
converted to PDF, without having to pull the bitmap object back out of
the document, and without converting the whole doc to bitmap form?
That is, I started with big tiff (or was it jpeg) B&W bitmap image;
dragged it into an Illustrator document; added all sorts of vector
colored annotations, text, etc, all over it; and saved it as PDF.
(All the vector objects and the bitmap image are all a single layer, I'm
pretty sure, though I think the B&W pixel image is behind everything
else.)
Now I want to modify one small area of the bitmap image by erasing all
the pixels in a small region of it, then drawing some vector stuff in
that area, without starting all over, messing up any of the added vector
art, or having to pull out the bitmap image, edit it in Photoshop
Elements, and then try stick it back in, or anything like that.
Can I edit the bitmap part of this PDF doc in Photoshop Elements, while
leaving the vector part untouched and not converted to bitmap format?
Elements doesn't seem to want to open the PDF without bitmapping all of
it. >> Stay informed about: How to edit bitmap part of PDF image in Illustrator? |

Why not note down the exact position of the bitmap in Illustrator (use
Transformer). Open the bitmap in Photoshop, edit it and replace it in
Illustrator >> Stay informed about: How to edit bitmap part of PDF image in Illustrator? |

Can do that if I must (haven't learned about Transformer yet). Was
hoping that Illustrator (thought I'm aware it's not a pixel editor)
would at least have somewhere the ability to just erase individual
pixels in bitmap objects in a vector image doc. >> Stay informed about: How to edit bitmap part of PDF image in Illustrator? |

Out of curiosity:
Suppose I open a jpeg or tiff bitmap image in Illustrator; add some
vector stuff along with it; Save to PDF (with Illustrator editing
capability preserved); reopen this PDF in Illustrator; Scale the entire
resulting image up and down in size several times, by varying amounts;
repeat as needed.
Through all this manipulation, does Illustrator somehow preserve the
full original jpeg or tiff bitmap file somewhere in the image file? --
and just resize a copy of it as needed to satisfy the output display
device and scaling?
Or if I Scale up and down several times, am I losing a bit of the jpeg
quality in each rescaling?
Does this behave differently if I start with a tiff image? >> Stay informed about: How to edit bitmap part of PDF image in Illustrator? |

AES,
Is the bitmap image embedded or linked in Illustrator? If it's a
linked file, and when you saved it as a PDF you had Preserve
Illustrator Editing Capabilities enabled, you can open the file,
select the image, and from the Main menu select Edit>Edit Original. If
Photoshop is set as the application that opens the type of bitmap file
(JPEG, TIFF, etc.) the image will open in Photoshop. You can edit it
there, save the file, and when you return to Illustrator you'll get a
dialog stating that the file has been modified. If you say "Yes" to
update the file, it will update without the unwanted pixels. >> Stay informed about: How to edit bitmap part of PDF image in Illustrator? |

Why not just apply a clipping path the the bitmap to negate the region
you don't want showing.
Apart from that, I'm not sure. I've never used Photoshop Elements. In
regular Photoshop you can Import>PDF Image, edit it and save. The
results should then appear in the PDF. >> Stay informed about: How to edit bitmap part of PDF image in Illustrator? |

Illustrator is vector.
Photoshop and others are bitmap.
One day all will be totally integrated, not yet.
Tiff or JPEG .......please tell us what you want to to do with the end
result. Print or Web? Simply scaling up a bitmap will harm the bitmap. >> Stay informed about: How to edit bitmap part of PDF image in Illustrator? |
