Post subject: Vertical panorama: Eliminating page breaks/appending graphics in Acrobat or Illustrator?
Archived from groups: comp>text>pdf, others (more info?)

Anyone have any ideas on a simple way to eliminate the page breaks in a
multi-page PDF document. or string together half a dozen PDF pages or
PDF or EPS vector illustrations into a single very long PDF or EPS page
or graphic -- a sort of "vertical panorama" -- using either Acrobat or
Illustrator (or GraphicConverter?), on a Mac? [Content of individual
pages or graphics is mostly text.]

I'm pretty sure I can do this using Illustrator, with a whole bunch of
Cutting or Copying from each of the individual input pages and Pasting
into the long output page -- but is there an easier way?

I don't know the answer to the question you asked, but here's something
else to consider: I believe there is still a maximum allowable dimension
for a PDF. I suppose you could just scale everything down to fit within
that if you're going to run over, but this will require some thought if
there are any raster images included in the pages (and don't forget to
scale stroke widths if you go that route).

I didn't look at comp.text.pdf so you may have got the answer there.

The maximum heigth for a PDF page is 200 inches.
Illustrator's document maximum height is 16838 px which is 233.6
inches

You can create a (up to) 200 inch high page in Illustrator and place
all of your content there and print it with Acrobat Distiller or
whatever you have.

Hey that resembles my old time question...how can I turn a round wheel
into a square one without damaging the spikes?

Furthermore: what is the problem with cutting and pasting?

Or just importing each file into a target document the right size ... that
way you don't have to oodles of files open -- or have to close each doc
after you've copied from it.

Thanks! -- "Import" is the clue I was missing.

[Now I have to read the documentation, and figure out how to position
the imported material where I want it right from the start -- instead of
it coming in centered and/or overlaying previously imported stuff, and
having to be repositioned.]

If you can do it in InDesign, all you'd have to do is prior to importing,
place your cursor in the top left corner of where you want it to "land" ...
InDy (CS3) does a pretty good job of allowing you to do minor vector edits
(though Illy's obviously the best tool for *that* job). And if it's a placed
EPS or AI file (might be worth it to save the files as such), you can always
just double-click on the placed files to edit them within Illy for those
that need fairly major editing.

To that end, what I usually do is place guidelines at the top, lefthand,
corners (obviously, putting guides at both vertical and horizontal points)
of where I need imported files (images, text, etc) to "land" and just use
those as guides as to where to put my cursor ...

An option in Illy is to place boxes where you want the imported images/files
to go, align/distribute them using the distribute palette, and then make
sure that the "replace selected" option is checked in the "import" dialog
box. At least, the last time that I needed a similar method that worked! Smile

HTH!!
