So I go into Illy CS, open up a one-page MS Word text document. The
various paragraphs of text are arranged into a selected rectangle (<->
the page) - like if I'd group objects together. But "Ungroup" is
dimmed on the menu, and I can't figure out how to select para 5 and
move it, without selecting and movng the whole imported page?

See, this is the type of question that we should see more often.
Are you trying to move para5 within the same flow of text?
Or, do you want it elsewhere on the page?

True, I use Illy 10, say Place, and choose the document type
(DOC in this case I guess). It appears in a blue box, but
editing and copying and pasting is all possible with the
text tool. So 9 and 10 have it, I would be surprised if CS
does not.

Not sure if this is sarcastic...

Sorry if I wasn't clear. The Word document is a title page, consisting
of several one line paragraphs:
My book
By me
In 2004
or whatever. When I open it in Illustrator, I get a page with a single
big rectangle, containing the paragraphs: when I click on it, it
selects the rectangle around the text, and each paragraph inside with
a little blue line under the start of it, just like normally selected
text. What I want is *just* to be able to select the paragraph, say
"In 2004" in the example above, and move this down the page, keeping
the other paragraphs fixed. Like if I added a couple of carriage
returns in my original Word document and reimported it. Probably it
would be simpler just to do exactly that, but I'd like to figure this
out in Illy for future reference. What I meant in my previous message
is that the effect is like I'd selected all the paragraphs and Grouped
them, though that's not what's actually happened because I can't
Ungroup them using the menu.

Pete,
Nope, no sarcasm -
you asked a good, serious but basic question.
Some of the other posters have been going on about how they always get
referred to the manual. Your question is one of those rare ones that is
not easily answered with a page reference. It is an honest question.

Import it seperately into a new text box. You can then not only move it
down the page, independently, but also twirl it, reshape it - the
possibilities are endless.

Yes, indeed it would - if that is all that you wanted to do.

Import them seperately and then group them =)
Illy really will let you do *anything* with your text. Do the bulk of the
word processing in Word, and then the layout in Illy. Import the text as
discrete chunks, and you can then arrange them to suit you.

Addendum:
Some things just are not that obvious, particularly to a new user. It is
nice to help out with stuff like that.
For example, did you know that Microsoft recommends using Illustrator for
icon design? You would not find that in the manual.

What you are trying to say is I believe what Pete is looking
for. Let me give it a try.
1. Open a document in Illy
2. Place your word doc in the page (choose Doc in the File
types, or if applicable RTF etcetera)
3. Switch to the Text tool (the T in your toolbox), ignore
the blue "textbox"
4. Select (highlight) and Cut the paragraph you want to move
and Paste it where you want it to be
It is as simple as that:)
