Just got the Multipage plug-in for Illustrator - played with it and it
looks good - no bugs yet. Now as to whether or not I blew $100 for
nada, don't know yet . . . afraid to take it to my local print shop.

Anywho, thought that having multiple pages in Illy was kinda cool . . .
: ) Now, if they can make a plug-in for that, why can't Adobe get
*their* act together???!!

Hugs to all!
Connie

I have played around with their demo. Its bascially just another way
of arranging layers. I too do not know what a printer would have to
say about resulting files.

I'm not sure why anyone would want to use multiple pages for Adobe
Illustrator. Illustrator is not a page layout application...although it
does have some good layout capabilities for one-page documents.
Illustrator is for drawing logos, technical illustrations and other
vector-based artwork. I would much rather use InDesign for any
multi-page publication.

I prepare multi-page documents in PDF format by creating individual
slides in Illustrator; saving them from Illustrator as individual and
still-editable PDF-formatted pages; then assembling these pages into
multi-page documents using the "Create pDF from multiple files" command
in Acrobat (or by opening all the pages simultaneously in Acrobat;
selecting one page as the master document; and copying other pages into
it one by one using drag and drop).

Sometimes I want to edit or make some small modification in one or more
of these pages in the assembled multi-page document using the original
page creator, i.e. Illustrator. Obviously I can extract those pages
from the PDF document; open and edit the individual extracted pages
using Illustrator; save them as PDF; and then replace these pages back
into the PDF document using Acrobat -- but that's a lot of futzing
around to make a small change in each page.

I've discovered that I can drag the entire multi-page PDF document onto
the Illustrator icon; Illustrator opens; and I then get a dialog that
allows me to open and edit *one* page of the multi-page document, and
save it as PDF. So far as I can tell, this editing is done on the
selected page *inside* the multi-page document, or at least the edited
and saved page remains inside the multi-page document.

Having done that on one selected page, however, I don't seem to be able
to select, open, and edit another page of the document in Illustrator
without first closing the PDF document and then again dragging it onto
the Illustrator icon. The Acrobat and Illustrator documentation on this
capability is not very clear, however, so I'm not entirely sure what's
going one here, or whether I'm using all the available capabilities of
the linked programs.

First off, there's a huge difference between illustration software and
page-layout software (obviously) - just because you might want to have
multiple pages, doesn't mean multiple pages of *text* - therein lies
the difference, LOL. Many a time, I've had to deliver illustrations
(primarily what I do - especially technical illustrations) and my
client would want several in one doc - well, that would mean collecting
them in one PDF via AP or Automator - no joy there. With this plug-in,
I can collect them into one doc as I do them and make my life easier.

Also, Inez pointed out that it's nice to design letterhead, biz cards,
etc in one file so you can flip back and forth to retrieve the logo,
text, etc. Of course, you can do that with InD, but why if you don't
have to? Illy handles vector graphics so much better and typically the
logo itself originates there - so why create the logo in Illy only to
have to import it into InD to create the layouts??

Finally, I'm old school - I used to do vu-graphs (a trip in the
way-back machine) in Corel . . . instead of creating essentially 12
diff files, it was nice to just create one doc with 12 pages. The
printer I dealt with prefered it that way. Keep the printer happy, he's
more likely to cut you a deal on pricing - at the very least, he'll
know that your files are stress-free and might push you ahead in the
queue . . . that never hurts. Too, as an ex-PPA, it's nice to know
that when outputting collateral material, you can save the PPA working
on your file an extra few minutes by having fewer files to open and
output to plate. : )

There *is* a niche for Illy to have multiple pages - just because you
might not see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

But really, no one mentioned anything about replacing InD with Illy! :
) I don't expect that anyone here would consider it reasonable to do
so!

Just a quick tip: instead of the whole close-re-drag/open file, close
then 'Open Recent...' It's a little more convenient.

The observed behavior is probably due to having the whole PDF file being
rewritten, slipping the edited data into place, and it being no little
task to add in the required functionality of being able to handle the
entire document at a go. Maybe in CS3. Smile
