I have created some labels in Illustrator CS.
I sent them off to a printer, but they said they can't open them because
they use Illustrator 9, and I have to save the file in the older format.

In previous releases of Illustrator, you could choose what version when you
saved the file, but I dont see that anywhere in CS.

Can anyone help?
Thanks

The new InDesign won't do it.
I wouldn't be surprised about Illy being the same -
with the new type engine and all.
You can't really open an older Illustrator file with CS properly
with the new type engine and all.

You printer should have the new software anyway - it's cheap.

Adobe should have put this option under the save and save as dialog boxes
(like any sensible application would do). At least there is something there
for me to tell all the folks that suddenly start sending AI CS files for
sign projects. Sorry, we prefer the old version 7 standard for bringing
things into FlexiSign Pro and EnRoute. CS may be the latest version, but
the latest versions are typically TOTALLY INCOMPATIBLE with 99.99% of most
people's workflows.

"Save" is for formats that can be read back in with no loss of data;
"Export" is for formats that loose data. Previous versions of
Illustrator had legacy AI formats under "Save" because it was possible
to round-trip files in many useful cases as long as you didn't use the
newest features. Because Illustrator CS has a completely new type
system, you cannot round-trip any file that has type through legacy file
formats. So the legacy formats were moved to Export. If you export a
file into a legacy format, the type will be broken up into multiple
separate pieces, like you get if you open most non-Illustrator PDF files.
