AI 10.0

Is there a way to add crop marks around the outside of a layout of 10
2"x3.5" business cards on a letter size page.
In other words, 6 marks on either long side of the page and 3 marks on the
short sides.

Thanks,

Rolf

Use the pen tool to draw lines where you require crops to be. I use .25 pt
stroke. It's a good width for crops. So depending whether you are inserting
a gutter between the cards, you will have 3 vertical lines (no gutter), or 4
(gutter). Draw the required horizontal lines. Depending on whether you use
gutter, your cards will be either 8 or 10 on a sheet. Be sure to keep all
gutters the same (1/4 inch), or you will piss off the guy who cuts them.
It's best to draw only one horizontal & vertical line. You can copy that
line to the required spacing. It's more accurate that way.

Once you have all your lines, group them. Use registration black to colour
them. That way you get the marks on every colour plate.
Draw a rectangle to cover your bus cards but leave what will become your
crop marks visible. Fill the rectangle with white.
Arrange (move) rectangle to back. Move lines to back (this is why you
grouped them). Done.

This is easier in a page layout - InDesign or Quirk - because you can step &
repeat the lines faster.

Keith.

There are business card templates included with Illustrator that have
these already done for you.

Alternatively, you could always draw one...place it where it should be...add
a guide where the second should go...turn on smart guides...select the first
crop mark holding [option + shift] and drag it out to the second spot until
it snaps to the guide (this will copy the first crop mark over to your
guide)...with the second crop mark selected and in place use [Apple + D] to
step and repeat until all the marks are done for that side of the
page...repeat for height or width.

So Yes, there is step and repeat in AI.

Enjoy!
